Mass and sketching

Today me an my family went to this mass given in memory of one of my uncles and his son. They passed away a year ago in a car accident.

While there, at the church, I saw this Jesus figure and started to draw it.

I wasn't raised catholic nor from any other religion whatsoever, still I find Catholic iconography a powerful and beautiful thing, even more those more violent ones.

I think the Jesus I drew looks a bit like Liam Neeson, isn't he?

On the weekend I read "The Host".

You'd say "Stephanie Meyer ? WTF?". Well, I couldn't care less.

I noticed the book around for quite some time now but never really feel like reading it. I'm not much a alien lover, the whole theme fot me is boring, even when I watch The X Files I get utterly bored by the whole thing (and it's supposed to be the main plot, the reason why the X files exists). I don't know if I could place Star Wars on the same level, because those I really like, so I won't talk about it.

No, I'm here to talk about The Host. Yes.

On Friday I decided to read it, why ? I wonder the same, but it was something calling me, saying "read me, please". I'm weak when this calling appears, so I didn't resist much.

At first the book didn't seem so bad, considering all the things people say about the Twilight series, which I also read a few years back. Maybe this was the main reason why to read this other book. I find Mrs. Meyer's writing very light yet somehow captivating, junk literature, my mum would say (Oh, yes, I think she'd like me reading quality literature, but let's face it, I also like this other one). As I was reading I found myself with a, let's say, not so teenage thing there, well, a bit, but more interesting and differently written, and then, this character:

Wanderer.

Wanda.

It's been a long time since a character caught me unprepared, in a way that, at first, gradually, I started to like her. She's so well constructed, with some flaws, yes, still very complete. By the time I was on the half part of the book I totally fell for her: it was love.

I don't like that Mrs. Meyer doesn't make much descriptions of characters, just a few hints of how they look like; this time it didn't matter at all, the whole idea of how Melanie's body would look like with Wanderer inside flown in my mind like silvering water. The idea of her was stronger than Melanie itself, which, I must admit, she wasn't one of my favourites. For some reason I didn't like her much, maybe because she reminded me of Bella's character, impulsive and whining all the time.

The idea of the book was really good. The idea of aliens coming to our planet to change it to another without violence, nor the need for it, but what captivated me the most was that the idea wasn't planned as absolut: not everything was ok, not everyone were bad or good, as many times in many things others likes us to think, to believe. In the story the characters changes their minds, their hate and love, aversions and likes. The idea of a person that is absolutely and utterly "bad" or "good" can change for the eyes of the beholder. Well done, Mrs Meyer ! You gain my sympathy because of this tiny/huge motiv.

Why am I writing all this ? Thing is, when the book ended, or maybe after it did, I didn't want anything bad happening to Wanda, that her last plan didn't work and she was saved from her own demise. I'm not going to say how it ends, and thought I felt it a bit weak, I liked it, demonstrating me how human and selfish I am.

I fell in love with the character, so deeply, that is almost like if I close my eyes and try really hard I can almost feel her, like somebody that just left the room but was here, with me, so close.

Lately I've been working on my thesis. Still I don't have much entries on it, just 3 pages, 3 !!!

My theme is "artist journal", so I'm basically working on the same things all over again. Some will be new images, such as the following, and some will be remakes of other journal entries.

I'll be uploading the process and maybe final works of it.

Desde hace ya unas semanas que he estado trabajando en mi tesis, y aunque al principio parecía que jamás iba a lograr arrancar, simplemente pasó, como arte de magia (y mucha determinación).

Mi tema es el "diario de artista", tema que ya he trabajado y la verdad me gusta mucho las posibilidades que me da. Muchas de las "entradas" dentro del diario van a ser obras hechas expresamente para esto y muchas otras serán basadas en las que hice en mis otros journals.

Bueno, la verdad parece como si estuviera escribiendo algo para burócratas, así que paro el rollo y mejor vean lo que llevo.

The past week I was working on 6 illustrations for some stories that are going to be published.

It was lots of work and sleeping until late at night but all good. With some of the money I earned I bought this wonderful new bag.

I really liked the whole Abercrombie & Fitch about it, still is pale ! How long would it last clean ? Two days, tops. Maybe I'll change the colour in the future or leave it all grose and dirty.

Janis Joplin !

She had an amazing voice full of feelings.

Perhaps for some Róisín Murphy doesn't have the greatest voice ever, but I love it.

2. What fantastic creature would you like to have by your side?

I always wanted to have a big red or black dragon and lately I've develop an obsession about gigantic animals, in such case I'd like to have a fire fox. Yes, it's all about the fire.

3. Is there any book you can read again and again? What is it?

I have this book since I was in my early teens named "Lost Souls" by Poppy Z. Brite. Is a book about vampires that get drunk with chartreuse and twinkies, have sex and goes through the USA listening to David Bowie, The cure, and such, well, actually is more than that, kind of lustful and poetic, in a dark way. I've read it several times and it's the only book I don't like to lend, mostly because the editorial is now dead (from Spain) and haven't found it again in spanish. I would like to read it someday in english, though.

There are some others I've read once but I'd love to read again.

4. Is there any historic/cultural event you'd like to witness?

I'd like to go to Woodstock, but knowing myself I know I'd be pretty cranky in less than 2 hours.

I'd like to be in certain periods, but being a mexican woman wouldn't be a good idea, specially broke ! u.u

5. What did you want to be when you were a child?

I wanted to be:

Blogging and reblogging on tumblr I found this beautiful box-star shape letter.

I've never done one before today so I decided to give it a shot. I looked the photo for a while trying to understand how was made.

Then after 2 tries I managed to make one. Ta-dah !

I need to make several more to fully understand how the foldings goes in the right way so the paper won't get too damaged.

I'm also working on this drawing. I found the photo of the girl and loved the coat. It was love at first sight, I wish I could have one just like it ^^

Now that I think it is funny because the drawing is made on paper for calligraphy :)

So, so, so, so, as I said yesterday night I did finish the drawing.

The title is "Little Megan and her Fox", which is a hidden joke, not complicated thing to understand, I guess, but I could be wrong...

I'd like to use this moleskine just for drawings of girls with animals. The first one is the girl with the goose, this goes second, still I don't know which animal will follow. I have several owl's pictures really beautiful ones, some monkeys, and deers, of course cats too.

Not really much but I've been drawing like crazy. How is that possible, then, that the two things can be true ? Maybe I feel like I haven't done much.

This is one of the drawings I've been working on, it's called "Little Megan...", well, I won't say the whole name just like that, not here, not now ;)

What I can say is that it will be soon finished, tomorrow, perhaps.

Another drawing comes from my journal. I felt like making a dog with a medieval taste.

I wanted to finish either of those today but last night I had a terrible pain on my rib again. Is a pain that never really goes away, just sometimes gets even worse, so I took a muscular relaxer and since I'm very weak for those kind of meds I slept all day.

Last night in my dream I saw how somebody killed a girl and her brain got loose becoming the killer brain xD It was so funny seeing it going around with a knife killing people.

That's what happens when I watch zombies movies mixed with painkiller xD

This is how it truly looks.

The idea was to make two entries with something that binds it, but I wasn't as bright as I woud like to be so I decided to be true to what really is and see them as separated things u.u

My first entry on my brand new journal.

Of all I've been using in the past I found that the squared ones are more comfortable; maybe is because when I was a child I used to love my math notebooks and those days when I saw my dad working on his equations.

I always wanted to study a physics of maths but, let's face it, I'm not good at it :( So I'll continue making drawings and pretending I'm a scientist :D

I like the cahier size for journal, large one is too big and I get the feeling I'd never fill it.

Today in the morning before breakfast I was taking some photos.

I love to watch the plants, their textures and colours, the shapes they make, lights and shadows. Even in simple dead leaves on the ground makes the most interesting view.

Truth is the whole "taking photos in the morning" was because of this tiny bug I found. I've never seen such bug before until today and found it very beautiful. It took me several photos to catch his "good side" but it helped that first I dropped the magnify lens and he got scared (the bug, not the lens... I guess), so stayed really still.

I wish I could have a real macro lens and take those kind of photos.

As it's from my journal it should has more, I know, still would look weird if I think of it as a whole with the previous drawing on the other page. Maybe a good idea would be to keep them as separate pieces.

Museum

My sister came for the weekend with her boyfriend and mother in law, so we decided to take them to the museum. There we saw this Jan Hendrix exhibition.

Is not allowed to take photos, but I managed to do it, but I took just the pieces I liked the most.

This one was very nice, with the light and shadows playing. It is a metallic spiral and the light comes from inside (lights coming from above), projecting all those beautiful shadows on the walls and floor. I was thinking I'd love to have something similar in my room with my bed inside it ^^

The frames here had photos, pieces of wood, seeds, stones, feathers, etc. almost like a naturalist or someone telling his stories from travels and far away lands.

The other exhibition was about portraits from lates 1800 and earliest 1900 in México. I wish I could have better photos and more of them , but the guard was looking me in a not so friendly way :/

In the morning Marcel is so calm and nice. Perhaps this is not something strange, still it is.

He has a very bad temper most part of the day, always upset and reproaching everything. When he was a young cat used to be calm and friendly, but one day he got sick, something scared the hell out of him, poor guy, after that his "catonality" changed for bad.

Recently he is starting to chill down, but only in the mornings and nights, coming into my room demanding for love and careness.

Today I made a sketch of my cats sleeping. It wasn't that simple because there were loads of noises and kept on moving and waking up, so I could only managed to draw their faces.

New notebook

So, today Miguel finished making a notebook for me, after some days me bugging him :D

There the materials, but at the end we chose not to use the white paper because I thought was too fragil to use it as cover.

Because it were two pieces of brown paper for the cover he chose to use the piece of red leather, which I think makes it tool stylish.

Now to see the size of the notebook and cover. A little too big but was good and he cut what wouldn't be used.

The blue paper for holing the notebook to the cover and give it a nice look inside. The paper is the kind we make for the notebooks we sell.

Cut in two and folded.

Some glue.

And cut to make it look nice.

More glue on the other side...

And, the paper.

Now putting a piece of fabric. This is very important so it will keep the sheets in one place (those were previously sewed).

Fixing the fabric with the help of a piece of wood.

All good so far.

It's time to place the cover.

Folding it.

Making sure it will fit.

Lots of glue, or enough ;)

And with a piece of cloth pressing so it will be good and glued the parts.

Last touches: cutting the edges.

Finally, this is how it looks. I used my little monkey friend to put the chinese symbol. Is something my dad brought me from China and it's supposed to say "Yoda". Still I'm not sure if I placed it upside down or what :/

I'll be using this notebook for sketches. There are some specific projects that I really need to make some drawings before making them as final pieces. Is something I don't usually do, but I think they're worth it, so keep in tune and I'll show them some time soon ;)

Finally, after weeks of hard work, I finished the portrait of Gustavo Aimar

I'm very pleased with the final image and, even if it is a big format (for me, at least), I had much fun working on it, listening to some music and my favourite radioshow named "exalofrío" which is about people calling to tell their experiences with ghosts and real horror stories. Perhaps one day I'll call to tell one of my own ;D

I'm now working on a serie of drawings that will be published with poems. I received an invitation to collaborate working for this project with a nice guy named Anthony Lucero.

I really don't know if I'll show them when they're finished, maybe not, perhaps would be better to wait for the final product; still I'll be showing the progress of them.

This next September my mum's radioshow for children will be 18 years old.

But this next month will be the last because she's been doing it for free, not because she wanted to but because they have always promised to make a contract and pay, which never happened.

Shared bed

Somewhere once I read about the pure act of sharing your bed with someone. Share it just for sleep, nothing more.

When we sleep is a intimate moment. Sometimes you sleep with the person you love, the person with whom you decide to share most intimate things. To let a "stranger", an outsider come into your bed could be an difficult act. First comes the silence just before falling asleep, the "finding the right moment" on which you or the other decide not to say something else, you let the silence fall between the bodies filling it all. Happens that one fall asleep before than the other, leaving one person bearing the emptiness in a crowded bed. For moments you can sleep, but now and then have to wake up when the questions start to fill your head:

"Is the other comfortable?" "Are you taking so much place, or making noises?" "When is the right time to wake up?", but most of all "Why is that person hugging the blankets while you're freezing?".

My main problem is the unconscious need of hugging. Could be anything, but what about when, in the middle of the night there's something bigger than Teddy, a pillow or just the blankets piled next to you. The need of hug becomes bigger, stronger, unavoidable. The moment never comes and the movement that could take you to do such act gets caught in the middle of it, in the middle of its natural course.

What would happen if, then, you don't stop and the reach of your arm gets the other in your embrace ? Would it be a moment of misunderstanding in the next morning ? The words would come, angry even, perhaps, perhaps nothing would happen and the other would take your arm away, could even, let it there and that's it.

I've shared my bed not too many times, with not too many persons. I shared it last night with a friend, and this morning I had to say: "Next time I'll make you my Teddy Bear".

I thought about taking a break from the Idea Book, because I have no idea what to do !

Some time while ago illustrator Gustavo Aimar asked me to draw his portrait, and I did, but didn't like it at all. I'm making it all over again, perhaps keeping some of the ideas from previous drawing, perhaps...

This time the drawing is bigger, on white paper. Is funny to notice how after working with some other papers, when I start drawing on this it shows how much my technique has changed, for better, gladly :)

Entry # 3 - My RCA Camcorder

This entry was about buying something inexpensive. Maybe now you're wondering "how in earth is a camera inexpensive ?" well, it was very cheap, for a digital video camera, of course.

I went with my family to a Coppel store and I was looking around when I saw it. Because of the price and how it looked like I thought this would have a low quality image, something I had in mind for the videoart thing I'm attending at school, so I asked my sister to lend me some money to buy it.

I can say that I'm so happy with it. Still have little things, though, I don't like so much:

-It needs batteries

- The editing program that has is pc only -why they don't think some of us use mac ? :/-

I don't care much about editing program since I'm learning how to use Adove PremierePro, but the battery thing... Maybe is because is been a while since last time I used an electric device that needs them.

Ok, so it wasn't as inexpensive as was said on the entry, but it sure is "a symbol for my need to create" or something like that ;)

This entry was kind of funny for me because I had to write about my relationship with the washing machine, which I don't have.

I just can't understand how this one works. I'm very skillful when it comes to know how things works, even without reading the guides, but this one, this one, is my Nemesis.

Maybe then you could think I don't wash my clothes and go around like a smelly hippie, but no, my mum does it for me. Yes, yes, I know I'm quite old for that, you don't need to say it.

My two new entries.

I wish I could have more time and head for doing all this entries, but seems that school and my own crazy head is playing tricks on my timeline u.u

Even if I worked before with "drawing the things in my bag" here I encountered again with the same subject. Some things are new and some not quite, as my Jimmy little bag for coins. ♥Jimmy ♥

Also I have my new Zapata's wallet, and for making it more "my own" I drew the red circles on his cheeks :D Perhaps some would not feel too amused by this, since he's one of the most important historic figures here in México, but I don't care :P

Here altering the page, which was harder than I thought in a way that I really didn't know what I wanted to do, what would had been better. At the end I think it looks funny, some kind of strange face :)

#34 was pretty simple, just making some circles and colouring them, the perfect excuse to use my gel pens :D

#76 Draw the sun

I know, sun is not supposed to have a face. How could would be to have a sun with a face... well, now I remembered the "Teletubies" one, that's scary !

Here comes the Sun King

Why I've been su bussy ? Thing is, I was editing a video for my videoart class, not that the teachers asked for it, but only because I wanted to do it. I wanted to do something like some of the examples we saw. Some of the artist that caught my attention is Pipilotti Rist, Douglas Gordon and Bill Viola - and another guy I can't remember his name right now (shame on me) -.

My exercice consisted on this:

There was this classmate skating outside the school before class and I just grabbed my phone and recorded him. The original video is 0:15 seg. I have one that is longer, about 3:00 something, still I wanted to play with time here.

The soundtrack was very clear as soon as I saw what I recorded. First I edited the video with "vintage maker" app and while watching it Colleen came into my mind, "so perfect" I thought.

Editing it wasn't as easy as I wanted to.

First I tried to use Adove Premier, but couldn't find the effects I wanted... before I continue I must said it was the first time I tried to use it, no wonder why never found what I was looking for. After an hour of being here and there and a borderline massive headache it was time to stop being so stubborn and go to my mum's PC (oh ! I have a MacBook) and use the old well known "movie maker", so, voilà ! Editing was much more simplier, though still I didn't find the effect I wanted, you know, the one that makes the image goes backwards :/ (But one day, one day, and that day will be the day, yes oh yes !).

Anyway

I feel comfortable with the final product and I want more ! :D

This entry is about making a map of my hand.

I've always liked maps, well, the old ones are very nice, like those from the sea with monsters. I wanted to make a simple one and invent where could the towns and places could be, thinking about the names they could have.

As I had used several other mediums on my drawings I decides to use this time charcoal, wax crayons and watercolour pencils.

I'm happy to know I finished first challenge. Go me ! :D

I also know I'm terribly late with this entry, but weekends for me are crazy enough for being late. Classes, teaching, even attending to lectures... ufff ! but not one day of going to the movies :( They're screening "Dr. Parnassus" and I want to go ! Also to watch "Robin Hood". When ? When ?? T . T

Well, today I watched at home Takeshi Kitano's "Zatoichi", wich is one of my favorite movies and film directors, wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, with no further delay here the last spoon:

Today while dressing the piercing that I had - a microdermal - got caught by the shirt and I pulled if off. It was all too fast and painful. Now I have a hole on my face !

I'm not planning to go and have it done all over again, no, not for me. Actually I'm relieved is gone because was causing me troubles when dressing or cleaning my face :/

In other news...

My brother found a cat with her babies living in this place, outside where we were having our lectures this weekend. They were 5 kittens, all so very pretty, and the cat was most friendly. The other guys there brought her food and they were saying something about taking the cat somewhere else because soon it will be raining.

At the end I don't know what happened, if they took her away, if they're going to come back, I just don't know. The kittens are too young to be taken away from her mother.

*I want one, but that's a secret, ok ? *

Almost done... almost, and for this time I drew the spoon without looking at it, trying to remember how it looks like, not even cheating by going pages behind and have a quick look.

Another thing was that I didn't use pencil before the ink, which is a big challenge for me since I always work in the same way.

I'm so happy that tomorrow (well, today since is 12 am) is the last time I'm going to be drawing the damn spoon.

Let me say this: It gets boring at some point....

Now the 5th spoon.

I realized that I haven't drawn it by the other side so for this one I decided to do it that way. Colours was calling me somehow so, why not try to draw it realistic ?

Today's been a good day, except for the dinner time. I ate a ham sandwich and all my body is itchy :( I don't know why I keep on thinking "this time it will not make me feel bad". Damn allergy :(

Ok, ok, I know I skip one day. I should had published this one yesterday and I didn't - bad Yoda, bad Yoda ! -

Yesterday I had a heat attack, yes, it was so hot here that only thing I could do was sleep ! When I woke up it was too late, around 9 pm, then I started to draw this while watching House MD last episodes of the 4th season, and you know what ? I cried sooooo much u.u. I know that Amber was "Cut Throat Bitch" but she was a good character, then why ? why she had to die ? Sniff, sniff... ok, I'll stop now ;P

For the drawing and since I didn't have much time to make it, I decided to use pencils. Remember when you were a kid and use to draw the outline of your hand ? NO ? Well, you should do it then, is lots of fun and the hand - drawing - looks fat :D I did the same with the spoon here.

In other news, this is what I ate yesterday - ok, I admit I was watching "Bones" while eating -. I wasn't sure how to cook the potatoes. Believe me or not I know how to cook lots of things but this was my first time cooking them.

The result was really nice: eggs with dill and potatoes with pepper. Yumm ! :D

Three spoons and I haven't quit yet.

Today I decided to use the 3 colored pencil for making the 3rd (Oh! the cleverness in me). To make the drawing didn't take much time, about 20 mins or so. Seems that working with this kind or material makes artistic life easier and faster, still is a challenge trying to get the right colours and mix them.

Working this fast is great since is so hot in the room and I want to cry ;P

This wonderful pencil was a gift from my comrade Siddartha.Babbii, a great guy and amazing artist. Several persons have tried to steal it from me (the pencil, not Bejamin), but I manage no keep it away from them and use it when ever I please :]

Photos today are not the best because I don't have my camera right now :( so I had to take them with the phone's.

Day two, so second drawing of the spoon.

This time I decided to use just one colour to draw it, and I must say not top quality; this little yet big, and believe me when I say this, element, made me so difficult to achieve what I wanted on the matter of contrasts.

Well, let's be honest: it doesn't looks that bad ;)

While I was drawing it I was "watching" the movie Nowhere Boy. It didn't disappointed me, thought I didn't know about it until today, hehehe. A long time ago I read a book about Lennon's younger years while he was still living in Liverpool and the movie is very much alike it. I have to come back to UK and go there one day :) (Yeah, beatles sucker).

I leave here the latest Beatles song I've been listening everyday for the past two weeks (Two weeks ??! Yes ;P )

100 Idea Book project

I've started a new project based on Keri Smith's 100 ideas.

Some days ago I was talking with my best friend and the feeling of wanting to do this took over me, so she sent me the list and I printed it.

Picking the right notebook wasn't as easy as I wanted: "One big ? No, because I would drop the project out of boredom". "One small ? No, too small" "What about this one ? Hmmmmm... not quite right". At the end I chose this one:

The way I wrote the letters and the colours makes me think about a cereal box :] (Yes, is a moleskine)

First entry is:

45. Draw the same project every day for a week.

I wanted to draw a spoon, just because I love spoons. Perhaps one day I'll have a tattoo of one, yes !
